The Golan Heights is an important area, especially given the current humanitarian crisis and civil war in Syria.
Here’s what you need to know about the area.
In 1967, Israel fought off the Syrian army and captured 2/3rds of the Golan Heights. After numerous failed peace offers, Israel eventually annexed the territory in 1981 (though the international community does not recognize this annexation). The Golan Heights’ high elevation protects the Jewish communities living there from the non-stop attacks which they used to face when Syria controlled the area. There is no simple solution to this dispute, but the international community should be asking itself a basic question: Would Syria really promote justice, peace, and human rights for the communities living in the Golan Heights?
