Because of the impressive performance of the battery of the Iron Dome, hour after hour and day after day in Operation Pillar of Defense, Ashkelon Mayor Benny Vaknin, has decided to give soldiers and commanders of the Iron Dome, the key to the city as a symbol of their service dedicated to protecting residents

The key to the city is given to  honor deserving people by the mayor and in this case the decision is to present the key to the soldiers standing guard, stationed at the Iron Dome battery in Ashkelon and who protect Ashkelon and the South in general.

The Mayor intends to hold the event in his office where he will give the key to the city to the Iron Dome battery commander and the soldiers stationed in Ashkelon along with personal certificates of appreciation to each of them.

Meanwhile, this week the mayor gave this honour to former defense minister, Amir Peretz, who initiated and pushed for the development of the Iron Dome project.   At the meeting between the two this week to assess the situation in the urban war room the mayor told Peretz: "If our Iron Dome system was different and we would witness more casualties and property damage. The Iron Dome system intercepted about 70 missiles so far and it is saving us. I remember your principles for the development of the dome. Proof of your security vision and I wish I could give you Israel Prize but I am not responsible for this but I am responsible for the award of Ashkelon. On behalf of all the residents of Ashkelon I give you this special award certificate.

A message from Ashkelon Mayor Benny Vaknin to mayors abroad:
"No country was willing to accept the reality of constant rocket fire toward"

The Mayor sent a message to the heads of the twin cities as well as mayors of other cities abroad in order to clarify the position of Ashkelon and Israel with the escalation of the security situation in the region

In a letter sent by Ashkelon Mayor Benny Vaknin, to the heads of the twin cities and acquaintances abroad, he explained the situation to them in the city of Ashkelon and the need for military action against terrorist organizations in Gaza: "Given the relationship between our cities, I felt an obligation and a desire to share my feelings about the political and security situation in Israel with you. Hamas and other terrorist organizations in the Gaza Strip chose to escalate attacks against Israeli civilians in recent days. The IDF's counter-attack has significantly reduced the strategic capabilities of the Hamas movement to harm Israeli citizens. The offensive included:

1. A precise hit on the top commander of Hamas, Ahmed Jabari, who was responsible for the deaths of many Israelis.

2. Significantly reducing the ability of Hamas to launch Far rockets against Tel Aviv and north of it. 3. affecting the ability of Hamas to launch rockets into southern Israel. "

He added : "Needless to say, that no country would be willing to accept the reality, in which citizens are under constant threat of rockets launched regularly by terrorists. Complex diplomatic and political involvement is taken on this account. Following the operation, Israeli Prime Minister spoke with U.S. President Barack Obama. In addition, Netanyahu spoke with Vice President Joe Biden, and UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon, as well as with other international leaders. Hamas and other terrorist organizations in the Gaza Strip continue to make use of human shields "form of Palestinian civilians to harm Israeli civilians, while the army continues to take drastic steps to try, as much as possible, to avoid harming innocent Palestinian civilians. As a member and local leader, it is important for me to share the above information with you.  None of us wishes for war and, moreover, we pray that every child everywhere, Israeli and Palestinian live in peace and security.
