IDF Stops Infiltration on Syrian Border - Anger in Hevron Region over Sabbath Demolition

A Syrian man attempted to infiltrate northern Israel on Saturday. The man disguised himself as a shepherd in order to get close to the border fence, then attempted to cut through the fence.

Soldiers spotted the man and fired warning shots. When the man did not respond, they fired at his legs.

The would-be infiltrator was hit. He was taken for medical care in Syria, and his condition is not clear.

IDF commanders believe the man planned to either carry out a terrorist attack or gather information in preparation for an attack. A senior commander in the Golan region told Arutz Sheva that there have been several recent attempts to approach the border fence, all by men disguised as shepherds.

The IDF recently increased its presence on the border. Fighting within Syria has spilled toward its borders, leading neighbors Lebanon, Turkey and Jordan to beef up their border security as well.

In July, several hundred Syrian soldiers crossed into the Golan Heights demilitarized zone. Israel filed a complaint over the incident, which violated a ceasefire agreement.

Anger in Hevron Region over Sabbath Demolition

Border police evicted Jews from the Mitzpeh Avichai outpost in the Hevron region on Saturday, residents of the area report.

The outpost has been destroyed and rebuilt dozens of times. Homes have sometimes been destroyed in the middle of the night, and on at least one occasion, residents say, an Arab demolition crew stole valuables. However, they said Saturday night, never before have police carried out a demolition on the Sabbath.

Resident Aryeh Davis accused the police of “adding insult to injury.” Davis, who has previously spoken to Arutz Sheva, said, “It’s not enough to destroy the land of Israel, they have to do it on the Sabbath, too.”

“Yet again they’ve shown that the law doesn’t interest them, and neither do residents’ sensitivities,” he added.

MK Michael Ben-Ari (National Union) called on the religious Shas party, which is part of the coalition, to ask Defense Minister Ehud Barak why it was necessary to desecrate the Sabbath in order to destroy a home in the land of Israel.

“Not only is the government of Israel forcing Jews out of their homes, officers are forcing soldiers to desecrate the Sabbath in order to meet the failed Defense Minister Ehud Barak’s political needs, and those of the Prime Minister of Destruction Binyamin Netanyahu,” Ben-Ari charged.
