The IDF has increased its preparedness and raised its alertness following concrete information regarding intentions by Hamas, as well as other terror organizations, to execute another terrorist attack along the Egyptian border in the very near future, the IDF Spokesperson said in a statement on Friday.
According to the statement, military sources suggest that these terror intentions may be an attempt to sabotage Palestinian Authority developments in the UN.
Israel’s Channel 10 News reported on Friday that security forces have spread along Highways 10 and 12, where the multiple terror attacks which resulted in the deaths of nine Israelis occurred last month. The two roads have been closed to vehicles since the attack.
According to the report, the IDF has received information that one or several small groups of terrorists are planning to infiltrate Israel from Egypt, as was the case in the previous terror attack in the area. The IDF decided to make the terror alert public in the hope that it will deter the terrorists from carrying out the attack.
The report said that IDF Chief of Staff, Lt. Gen. Benny Gantz, has received an update on the terror alert and has been talking to commanders in the Southern Command regarding the deployment of additional forces along the border area.
The IDF also beefed up its presence in the area last month amid a report about a planned attack by Islamic Jihad terrorists from Gaza.
Ever since the ouster of former Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak, the Sinai Peninsula has been in a state of anarchy, a fact which has made it easier for terrorists to carry out attacks from that area.
